One Simple Truth About Communication and Leadership

Managers worry about overcommunicating with employees yet maybe a recent article from Harvard Business Review (HBR – March/April 2023) may get you to rethink your position.

They analysed 2,717 comments from leadership assessments and found…

  • Overcommunication was sited 46 times or 1.7%, however,
  • Undercommunication was sited 421 times or 16% of the comments

Those leaders with the higher communication scores received the highest rating from employees. Conversely, lower communication scores meant the lowest rating from employees and this included lower ability levels and lacking empathy.

Overall, employees reported management communicated far less than they would like.

So, there is work to do and it could be as simple as communicating more with all employees.
