19 Jun Ahead of his time
One of Western Australia’s youngest General Managers of a large family business decided to take steps to transform his own health and wellbeing, hoping these changes would lead to a direct and positive impact on him and the business.
Callum (27 years) decided to connect with Dr Graeme Wright from Optimum Health and Management Services. At the time Callum was being stretched in all directions across the business, life in general and he was lacking a clear pathway to better manage his health, wellbeing and performance. He was committed to looking after himself further but did not have access to a system that would help him manage the physical, behavioural and metabolic changes required.
This is what the Optimum system is designed for. Callum’s initial motivation to work with Dr Graeme Wright and the Optimum Program was…
“We are all working tirelessly, and I needed to take stock of my own health and performance as it is currently having a negative impact on our employees and the company.”
Something had to change and Callum saw himself getting into better shape as the first step.
We agreed to obtain data to build a world class scientific baseline. Blood data was obtained. Metabolic health assessed. Physical measurements taken. Sleep, Head Health and Lifestyle questionnaires were completed. On boarding to access Optimum’s Health Hub was also part of the initial process.
The data collected in April 2025 indicated that Callum was on the border of obesity. His blood pressure (BP) was on the cusp of being hypertensive. His physical girth measurements indicated there was too much of him. Metabolically he was sluggish even though he had a big engine. He was borderline glucose insulin resistance. This meant that any weight management approach would be challenging and a slow process. We agreed that there was quite a machine in Callum’s body – it just needed a process to help it get out.
The first month of the Program we decided would be a “macro-month.” This meant Callum could take his time to analyse and review his data. He could then decide what he wanted from the Program. The level of support he may need. What risk factors he wanted to prioritise. And how he wanted to work together to meet targets and create timelines for change.
The Optimum system allows for Dr Graeme Wright and Callum to build something that is unique, manageable and definitive.
We agreed progress would happen, but it would be a slow burn. Patience and perseverance would be needed. Change is always tough and the Program does not offer false hopes about how easy it will be.
At the start of the Program (April 2025), Callum was classified as a B Grader for Heart Health, with a score of 79%. His Head Health was OK at 83% while his Sleep Profile needed attention with a score of 74%. The data suggested there needed to be “some tweaking” for Callum to be operating at his optimal.
Individual monthly consultations allowed Callum and Dr Wright to build an approach that had a built-in 30-day review process. This allowed his individual risk factors to be addressed and reviewed, plans developed and action steps outlined.
The action steps needed to fit into a busy lifestyle, sporting commitments, consuming management duties, early rises and limited “free time.” There was work to do. The creation of an agreed pathway to follow afforded Callum the confidence to proceed with purpose. He has maintained that focus over the period of the Program.
In May 2026, 12 months down the track the results are extraordinary.
Callum is now a true A Grader. His Heart Health score has improved 17% to a near perfect 97%. His body weight reduced by 8 Kgs and body fat by 12%. All girth measures reduced by between 5%-8%. His Blood Pressure (BP) is now managed better with a 12% reduction. In addition, his non-fasting blood glucose levels have reduced by 10%, as has his insulin levels by a massive 33%. His glucose insulin resistance has improved by 35%. Subsequently his metabolic health has improved significantly as has his cognition. In addition, his Sleep Profile and Head Health scores have improved by 10% and 18% respectively.
Callum has done the work. We identified what could be improved. Small achievable targets were set. We continually built on what we had. Small gains were the objectives. We wanted to continually work from the known to the unknown.
“Making a series of small changes over time and having to front up each month to review how the month had been for me helped keep me on track.” Callum said.
Callum also said, “That he thinks about what and why he is doing things differently now as the changes I made have not required a massive review of my behaviours. One change that has worked well is to “eat clean” and as a mantra this has helped offer a reference point for something at which I was not good.”
Callum is the youngest executive we have worked with, and we are delighted that the Program and its support systems have helped him achieve significant changes. Callum still enjoys life. He displays more confidence in how he approaches the “party times.” He accepts that it is up to him to ensure whatever level of control he wishes to impose.
Callum has been fully engaged with a tried and tested system over a 12-month period. He now works more efficiently, and the family business is grateful for the changes.
