Impact of leaders…it is profound
Health, wellbeing and performance must be at the top of organisations’ agendas. Recent research adds more weight to this quest.
Discussions on wellbeing in the workplace must move beyond a “feel good”, moral or ethical consideration to offer employees. It must be a business imperative. The key in getting traction with this matter is the health and wellbeing of the leader. The behaviour of the leader Is the dominant consideration to achieving a healthy organisation. Currently, the effectiveness of ad hoc, tick the box interventions such as wellbeing apps and massages are being increasing questioned. Therefore, there must be a structured, strategic consideration of how health and wellbeing will be delivered in the workplace.
The rise of compliance, legislation and ESG requirements have helped businesses make organisation health, wellbeing and performance a crucial and sustainable element of business practices. But this is only part of the equation.
There must be a transition from seeing wellbeing as an add on to HR functions, to a more strategic priority, championed by the business leaders. The leaders must provide overt support. A big part of this support is leaders attending to their own heath and wellbeing. It is the behaviours not merely the introduction of ad hoc interventions that will gets the result.
The leaders’ behaviours have the biggest impact on the health of the businesses.
Leaders’ wellbeing isn’t just a “nice to have”, it’s the most powerful driver of both organisational wellbeing and performance, more so than health apps, courses, or fruit bowl on the front desk. The impact is measurable…
Wellbeing of the Organisation
56 x more effective than stress management programs.
50 x more effective than apps.
9 x more effective when fostering employee authenticity over bonuses.
19 x more effective when supporting employees outside of work when compared to stress management classes.
Performance of the Organisation
11 x more effective than employee stress/resilience programs.
4 x more effective than wellbeing apps.
It is time for change. Leaders who embrace their own health and wellbeing will see their organisation’s wellbeing as the engine to optimum performance. These forward thinking leaders recognise that employee wellbeing offers a competitive edge, compared to those organisations where the leaders do not look after their own health and wellbeing.
