Cost of Treatment in Australia

Waiting for something to happen or go wrong… and then trying to fix it… is an unsustainable business practise.

Australia has created systems that reward treating people. In fact, 98% of our health care budget is allocated to treating and/or fixing a range of health, wellbeing and risk factors in the workplace and across our communities.

Something must change. Leaders across all industries are best positioned to drive such change. Prevention must be their focus. Currently only 2% of the health care budge is spent on prevention.

Such a massive disparity in spending will not be turned around quickly. However, we must all strive to take more responsibility for our own health, wellbeing and performance across our communities and within organisations.

The workplace offers a unique opportunity to mitigate our risks, reduce expenditure and gain mutual benefits linked to productivity, engagement, performance and wellbeing. The real benefits are further enhanced when the leader is well. A well leader will lead well and impact individuals, teams and organisations. They will all flourish.

Forward thinking leaders see employee wellbeing as a weapon. It offers a competitive edge. It is an essential ingredient in the culture of any organisation. It fosters belonging. It enhances positive behaviours in the workplace. Employees feel better, healthier and behave differently. They also work more effectively. Prevent rather than cure has to be the motto.

The data linking health and wellbeing of any workforce to immediate commercial benefits and the health of the organisations is compelling. For these outcomes to be sustainable, the focus must remain on prevention within the workplace.

Any preventive health, wellbeing or performance offering at work must be integrated into an overall long-term strategy of the organisation. It cannot be a “tea bag” offerings that amounts to short term, one off, gimmicks that are not evaluated.
