ABC…of Mental Health

Surprisingly, this has nothing to do with the alphabet.

It has all to do with several elements or domains that help individuals get a better understanding of their own mental health and wellbeing. It provides a further indicator of where risks may present within employees, organisations and communities.

A (Act), B(Belong) and C(Commit) is a research based, self-reporting approach to better understand how these three domains contribute to one’s mental health and wellbeing. ABC was developed by Prof Rob Donovan and his colleagues and used in a variety of settings around the world. We use it to complement other profiles and to getter a broader picture of where risks may be within employees and businesses. It identifies the extent to which these elements are impacting the workforce. It allows interventions that mitigate the risks and improve the overall health, wellbeing and performance of your business.

ACT (A)

Research shows that individuals with higher levels of physical, cognitive and social activity experience higher levels of wellbeing and better head health. It also means individuals will have greater opportunity to alleviate anxiety and depression. Both anxiety and depression are prevalent within workplaces and society. Just do stuff.

BELONG (B)

A sense of belonging and identity is fundamental to one’s head health. Getting involved in group activities with work colleagues, family and friends results in strong personal support. This support is one of the most important factors for maintaining positive and mitigating risks associated with mental and physical health. Belonging builds social cohesion and the more connections. Greater cohesion leads to a greater contribution to individuals’ mental health and wellbeing. Our date indicates this is the strongest element of the three domains in workplaces.  Belonging beats compensation for individuals within healthy organisations (2025) *. Just do stuff with people.

COMMIT (C)

This is about getting involved in activities that provide meaning and purpose in life. Making a commitment provides a sense of accomplishment, feeling good about oneself, developing a stronger feeling of self and more. Volunteering and committing to your community, whether at work or your local neighbourhood, helps one feel great about oneself. Such actions impact the cohesion within your community, your workplace and one’s quality of life. There is a positive flow on to helping manage one’s mental health and general wellbeing. Just do stuff for others.
